Charles Phillips’ seven-year stay as the President of Oracle definitely gave the company a lot of accomplishments. From big revenues to acquiring companies that helped them in the long run, all of these were attributed to their former president. Considered as Oracle’s secret weapon after getting him from Morgan Stanley, Phillips was able to deliver what many thought he would be able to do before stepping down and moving on to another company.

In 2003, Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, took a huge risk in hiring Charles Phillips as their vice president. It turned out to be a worthy risk for the software developer. With Phillips on board as its president after almost a year, he was able to turn things around for the company by increasing their revenue from almost 300 percent, valued at around $27 billion. In his seven years stay at the helm, Oracle was able to snag over 60 deals, which made them a giant software conglomerate. He also helped the company in acquiring PeopleSoft in January 2005, Siebel Systems in January 2006, Hyperion Solutions in April 2007, BEA Systems in January 2008 and Sun in August 2009. These acquisitions assisted them in restoring their product lines. Oracle’s acquisition spree is part of a tactical move that allows the company to compete with SAP—a large company specializing in enterprise software. Phillips then surrounded the company’s ERP (enterprise resource planning) system with best software for HR (human resources), CRM (customer relationship management), PLM (production life cycle management), performance management, transportation management and demand planning. Charles Phillips would often refer to it as the “wedge strategy.”

His great contribution to Oracle is something that no one would ever forget. That is why Charles Phillips is well-known name to almost everyone in the IT industry. Truly, great achievements continue wherever the visionary is. His innate ability to lead people gave him the chance to secure another high-ranking position with Infor, another fledgling enterprise software developer. He made acquisitions for other companies virtually attainable. There is no doubt that he will continue to perform well in his current job.
